A robot can accept the command. Who decides it may move?
A shared hardware interface makes devices easier to connect. Permission to act still needs its own boundary.
The short answer
The complete system must decide whether an action is permitted under current conditions. Understanding a command is only the first gate; it does not establish operating safety.
On this page
The cable is connected. The decision is not finished.
Imagine a simulated inspection cell with a camera and a robot arm. An AI can request a picture or propose moving the arm through the same software interface. Both requests look equally easy to send. But observing a scene and moving through it have different consequences.
This fictional example asks where permission and current operating conditions are checked. A connection tells us a command can reach a device. It does not establish that the movement is appropriate.
Original conceptual example / Not measured results
Understanding a command is only the first gate.
Proposed control boundary Software-only example
A command path needs a refusal path. Identify the component that can stop the action.
Not a complete control design or proof of physical safety. Required controls must be defined by qualified specialists.
About this visual
An independently authored explanatory model. It shows the condition to inspect, not measured performance or a complete implementation. Read the source and limits below.
What changed
Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard research preview describes a shared interface for agents and programmable instruments. Its drivers expose commands and device characteristics. The announcement also describes device-level safety limits enforced through MHS and work with partners on further safety evaluations and practices. These are the developer’s descriptions, not controls independently tested by Curious Compute. [1]
Those controls matter, but they do not by themselves establish that a complete installation is safe. Our interpretation: reviewers still need to identify which limits are enforced, where they are enforced, and how the system responds when operating conditions are unknown. A preview of integration is not certification of a complete installation.
The decision this changes
Our interpretation: an integration review needs two maps. One shows how an instruction reaches the device. The other shows which component can refuse it.
Ask who defines permitted actions, where current operating conditions are checked and what happens when those conditions cannot be confirmed. Reading a manual correctly does not answer those questions. A demonstration of coordination is evidence of coordination within its stated conditions.
For builders Methods, implementation details and source evidence
The boundary belongs outside the conversation
In a proposed architecture, separate observations, proposed actions and commands permitted to execute. A controller outside the model’s conversation should apply the installation’s operating limits. A human’s approval of a plan does not make every later machine state valid.
Record the command, permission, observed conditions and device result. This is an architectural discussion, not an operating procedure or safety specification. Qualified specialists must determine controls for physical equipment.
What we don’t know
We have not used the Model Hardware Standard or inspected its preview implementation. We make no claim about fault response or suitability for any installation. Our diagram omits physical dynamics; it cannot establish that equipment is safe.
Try this Open the full exercise and its limits
Try this
Use a paper review or software-only mock device. Label example requests as observe, propose or execute. Make one required condition unknown, such as whether the work area is clear.
Trace which component rejects execution and which record explains the rejection. The expected result is visible uncertainty, not assumed permission. Do not connect this exercise to real machinery. It checks whether the review identifies a control boundary.
What to watch next
Ask for documented rejection behavior, operating assumptions and independent evaluation of the complete system. Which safeguard remains effective if the agent misunderstands its task?
One AI decision, made clearer.
